Naming Conventions

Channel Cities and World of Ærnth wiki Naming Conventions
As is standard with wiki’s, all data will be organized by its name, therefore use of consistent naming formats by all contributors is necessary to keep things organized. Whenever entering data for a new location, person, or anything else, always check to be sure that the name has not already been used. While it is recommended that the same name not be used more than once for anything, there are some obvious exceptions to this:
- NPC’s- it is always possible that multiple people can have the same name (and this may be somewhat common if this setting grows as much as intended. Always check to see if a name is already being used, and if it isn’t feel free to use it as desired, however if an NPC already exists with this name, then please add the location of your NPC to the name. Example:
- Edgar Greenteeth- the ferryman that operates the ferry that crosses the sweetwater river near Delby (original NPC)
- Edgar Greenteeth eastshire- a farmer who raises sheep in the northern reaches of the Eastshire (secondary NPC with the same name)
- Villages/Towns- always check to ensure that the name has not been used. If it has, then try to come up with a different name (especially if the original settlement with the name is within several hundred miles), if the name you want to use is used but is located at the other end of the same continent or even on another continent, then it should be okay to use it again, but try to note its location to discern it from the original settlement (add its continent name or the name of the nation that is part of). If it is in the same nation or there is a similar settlement nearby come up with a different name (ask for help if you don’t have any ideas of alternatives).
- Cities- This is a case where the same name being used for two (or more) locations should be avoided unless there is a specific reason behind it (which there is one case of this that already exists within the Channel Cities and World of Ærnth setting. That is the city of Argentum, which is one of the five cities that make up the Channel Cities and was one of the early trading outposts of the Ruglund Empire a couple of millennium earlier. Then there is a second city called Argentum that is located much further to the west (about half way between the larger Channel Cities Argentum and the Ruglund capital and was also a trading outpost of the Ruglund Empire. However back during the days of the Ruglund Empire, these cities were known as East Argentum (Channel Cities one) and West Argentum (the one closer to the empires capital). Thus with this particular case the larger of the two will be displayed as Argentum and the second one displayed as West Argentum.
- Businesses- while it is possible for several businesses to exist with the same name, we will avoid using the same business name within the same area (as an example the Channel Cities will the prime location where this is likely to be a problem due to the huge number of businesses that exist within this huge metropolitan area). You should always search for info regarding a business name before adding it to the wiki, to ensure that it has not been used yet. If it has been used but not in the same area of the world, then you can use it but differentiate it from the original business by adding its location (city, village, etc.) to the name designation. In a situation like the Channel Cities where there are tens of thousands of businesses this will be difficult as we want to ensure that no to businesses use the same name (regardless of if they are located in different cities within the Channel Cities) as any business owner knows that it is key to have some way to differentiate your business from that of your competitors and as such it is best to come up with something original. Note however that in some cases there are currently buildings within the Channel Cities that will use the same name, however in these cases, these are different locations that are owned by the same person (some of the warehouses of some of the larger merchants are prime examples of this, as they will often times have one or two warehouses in more than one of the five cities that make up the Channel Cities (with there nearly always being at least one located in Argentum since it is the Trade Center of the World of Ærnth.
