Put simply it is a Role Playing Game.
It can be thought of as a way to escape the real world in which we live and visit other worlds that exist only in our imagination. Think of it as "living" a good novel. It is like reading a book, except that instead of the author deciding what happens next, you as a player in the game have some control over what occurs. Of course in real life, we do not control every aspect of our lives, as randomness and chance also play a part, but this is simulated in RPG's by the use of "randomizers" (dice, cards, etc.) to simulate the chances of something occurring or succeeding.
The way this works is that you (as a player) take on (or "act out" if you prefer) the part of a character or Protagonist. You determine what the character does and how he/she acts and reacts to the environment. This environment can vary greatly, as it is only limited by ones imagination. You can play the part of a fearless knight on a quest to save the kingdom from some vile or evil creature. Or you can be a wizard and wield magical powers to defeat your foes and uncover lost secrets. You can pilot a spacecraft across the galaxy, exploring new worlds, battling aliens in the cold silence of space, or operate as a trader carrying cargoes from one space port to another in the hopes of making a sizable profit. You can hunt vampires, or you can be a vampire hunting the vampire hunters. You can be a gunslinger in the old west, rustling cattle or capturing train robbers. You can serve as an agent in "her majesties secret service" (and maybe run into James Bond or some other member of your organization). You can command tanks and artillery on the battlefield during WWII. Or you can command futuristic armored exoskeletons that act as an extension of the pilots that sit inside (when you take a step, your "mech" takes a step that is 5 yards long, when you point and tense your finger your "mech" fires the particle accelerator that is attached to its 5 ton arm and when you look and blink rapidly at your enemy, the missile launcher on the shoulder of your "mech" fires a volley of heat seeking missiles at the target). You can lead your army of elephants across the mountains during the Peloponnesian wars. You can try to solve the mysteries of the ghosts that are haunting the old mansion at the end of the street. You can infiltrate the computer system of some corporate firm as a hacker, to uncover their plot to release some horror upon the world. You can battle the Green Men of Barsoom with your sword and radium rifle. You can rescue people stranded on alien worlds when their spacecraft crashes. You can explore the bowels of the earth. You can try to save the forest by helping to organize the other creatures against the loggers (the other creatures look up to you, after all everyone knows that wise old owls such as yourself are the pillars of the woodland community). Or you can fight injustice and crime with your mutant super powers.
RPG's are a way to be able to experience things that you otherwise would not be able to. To live an alternate reality for a short time now and then. Think of it as an "Exercise in Imagination" or as Steven Brown calls it in The Everlasting experiencing your own "Personal Mythology".
I am hoping to start an email version of this game soon, so if you are visiting and are interested in taking on the role or persona that resides in the Secret World, email me to get details as to how you can become a part of this wondrous and at the same time mysterious world. There are many possible Protagonists that can be played, as each one is different, not only because of the protagonists race or abilities, but also the personality and history or background that you will develop for this character. After all, no two actors will play the same part in a movie the same way. The "races" or Gentes that are available for characters or Protagonists are as follows: Angels, Daevas, Dead Souls, Djinn, Gargoyles, Ghuls, Manitou, Possessed, Questers, Reanimates, Revenants, Vampires, or Werewolf (Lycanthrope). Take a look around this web site to learn more about the Secret World, what and where it is, who populates it, and what transpires within.
If this sounds interesting, take a look at the Protagonist Creation link to the left and then develop a character idea as described on that page and email it to me using the email link provided at the bottom of the navigation frame to the left.
