Shadows of Humanity: the Everlasting RPG
Reanimates

"Unliving Children of Dark Science" (quoted from the Everlasting, Book of the Unliving, page 177, © 1997-98 by Steven C. Brown)

The following quote is being re-printed from pages 178-180 of The Everlasting, Book of the Unliving, and describes these abominations of Dark Science. These created beings, often made up of body parts stiched together from corspses or mechanical parts, who are brought to life through the containment of "Life Essence" from other beings who have died and then implanted into the "body". These bodies can be completely of human origin (think of Frankenstein's Monster) which are called Fleshfreaks, they can be a combination of human flesh and mechanical or cybernetics and are refered to as Deathmechs, or they can be of completley inorganic forms that are then "brought to life" using the dark arts of Occult science to create Golems:

Reanimates are tragic dead souls, who have gained immortality through a foul and twisted means that bound their spirits to earthly vessels. Unlike revenants, reanimates did not neccessarily choose to come back to life, other people, such as mad scientists and evil magicians, made the choice for them. Most reanimates do not fit into revenant society well and reamin loners. Reanimates are misunderstood monsters, even by eldritch standards. These pathetic yet powerful beings are both pitied and feared by most immortals for their tragic conditions of half-life, (though certainly many ghuls woudl not mind eating the fleshy ones.)

There are three basic varieties of reanimates; they are teh Fleshfreaks, the Deathmechs, and the Golems. The Fleshfreaks are creatures composed of living and dead organic tissue. Their parts often come from many different sources and are patched together through dark science or magick. The Deathmechs are Un-dead cyborgs. The Golems are dead souls that are magickally bound into constructed inorganic bodies.

Most reanimates are created by using electromagnetic waves and a bit of occult science. The Essence, which represents the dead soul, is captured and contained within some sort of stabilizing device from which it may be later transferred into a body that is brought back to life. Chemical baths, countless surgeries, reanimatory drugs, and electircal shock treatment are all involved in the process. Only about one-quarter of original soul transfers are successful, even when the experiment is perfomred by a highly-experienced mad scientists using state-of-the-art equipment.

Huge laboratories filled with strange-looking, pseudo-scientific devices are required for creating reanimates. Most laboratories are cold, dry, and dark in order to better preserve the corpses they use. Many have large meatlockers for body part storage, along with numerous operating tables, bone saws, drills, gouges, and other "medical" equipment.
