"A Strange and Alien Civilization of Spirits and Fleshy Creatures" (quoted from the Everlasting, Book of the Spirits, page 249, © 1997-98 by Steven C. Brown)
The following quote is being re-printed from pages 153 through 155 of The Everlasting, Book of the Fantastical, and describes the incredibly alien, magical, and strange beings known as Faerie or Fey:
Faerie are not the delightful little gossamer-winged people found in Victorian fairytales. They seldom sit around in forests on toadstools or take children off to happy fantasy worlds. Faerie are also not like the elves, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes found in modern fantasy novels. They are inscrutible alien entities from a mysterious and magickal world. They are very deadly and bear strong ties to the mysteries of Nature. They are like aliens, spirits, and ancient gods all rolled into one. They are physically diverse, with over two dozen races identifiable and many subraces that are much more difficult to define and recognize. Races include trolls, sprites, knockers, spriggans, kobolds, and more. Many are not even humanoid in form or size. Contact with faerie should seem like a brush with chaos, raw magick, and the freightening Undead.
Faerie are among the most alien and fantastical of the eldritch. They are called the Fey, which means bizarre. The word Faerie originally meant "a state of enchantment," but originated from fatae, which means "fate."
More details of the outlook and background of the Faerie and other information is available in the Everlasting, Book of the Fantastical from Visionary Entertainment Studios.
